Mid May

May is just getting away from me. It's a busy month with baseball starting, Mother's Day, and my birthday.

Jeremy & Jermaine's team is still undefeated. They both are pitching and doing very well. I am so impressed with everything they do.

Mother's Day was great. I sat outside, knitting, next to my neighbor's very fragrant lilac bush. It was a warm day. We went to dinner on Saturday night--Mexican food, yummmmm!--and lunch on Sunday. Then on to Jim's mom's. Off to Home Depot to buy plants, which the boys helped me plant.

That evening Jim and Aaron had to go on a bug hunt. In school the next day, the kindergarteners were using the bugs they brought in for a counting exercise. They started in the backyard and then I suggested looking in the front for one of the many worms I ran across while planting earlier. They were successful, and Wormy was captured.

My birthday was ok. This is officially my last one. From now on, I will be celebrating anniversaries of my 39th birthday! I received lots of cards, many fat quarters from the Illinois Quilters yahoo list, lots of phone calls from my siblings, and nice presents from Jim and the boys. I did ask for two things: a small purse dog and a red convertible. I didn't get either! lol

Art-wise May is getting away from me! I do knit almost every day. Finishing up the second pair of double circular needle toe down socks for Aaron. My first pair aren't the greatest. I definitely should have done all the correct measurements before whipping them out. But they are finished. Aaron's socks almost fit exactly, but I swear his foot grew slightly lengthwise since I started knitting them. Don't laugh...he's growing like a weed right now!

I was inspired to paint some fabric. The first piece is 18" circular. I used Elmer's Glue Gel as a resist and used Createx paints. I LOVE Createx paints. I could be a spokesperson for Createx paints. I love the way it paints everything--wood, paper mache, fabric.

I ran into a snag when I tried to get out the glue without heat setting the fabric. Some of the paint washed out. So I washed the glue out and re-painted some of the colors. I think it looks very cool. I'm still deciding whether or not to add other layers of paint/stamping or to get right into the quilting.

The second piece is about 12" square. I started with a Clorox bleach pen. I drew some tulips free-hand. The only thing I didn't like about the bleach pen was the smell. It didn't smell like bleach, there was an underlying icky musty smell. At least to me. It wouldn't come off my hands! But the tulips bleached nicely. Today I colored in the bleached areas with gel pens ($17 for a million gel pens at Costco. A great buy!). I think I'll touch it up a bit with some markers and then quilt away.

These pieces are both too big to be a journal quilt, but they've given me ideas. I'll work on something slightly smaller and come up with May's very soon.

Opening Day Ceremonies Posted by Hello

Art a Day in May

On a yahoo list someone spoke about creating something each day in May. So I jumped to take the challenge. Here's where I am so far...

May 1st...spent the day being a baseball mom and the night thawing out. My three sons are in little league and Sunday marked the opening day ceremony. We endured through rain, sleet, hail, and freezing temperatures. Then the twins had a game and I spent over 2 hours sitting in the cold watching. They won, by the way! No art completed.

May 2nd...I was miserable all day from the cold I seem to have contracted over the weekend. I did do some knitting on my socks on the circular needles. I am almost done--just a few more inches on the cuffs. If dreaming counts, I dreamt of several different dolls to make. No art completed.

May 3rd...I spent hours creating the template for a doll I was going to make out of roof flashing. The doll looks great. Ideas were soaring through my brain as I thought of colors to paint it...embellishments to add. But when I transferred the design to the flashing and started cutting it out, it was a nightmare. I tossed the whole thing into the trash about half way through. I still have pieces of metal in my fingers, I think! I hope successfully creating something isn't the only thing that counts. Because I DID try. And the doll template is really cute. I do have another idea for it...and I'll still get to embellish.

Now where are the canvases. I need the canvases...
